KinderWait Runs in Massachusetts and North Carolina

The latest generation of KinderWait (Version 3) runs statewide childcare waitlist operations in Massachusetts and countywide in Wake County, North Carolina. The Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care (EEC) deployed KinderWait in the summer of 2011. Several thousand users around the state run their childcare waitlists. The state is also planning on opening up KinderWait Client Access to allow clients to submit and maintain their information themselves online.

In Wake County, North Carolina, the system is used for a countywide waiting list and subsidy management. KinderWait produces the Child Care Action Notice (CCAN) and allows case managers track their subsidy clients. North Carolina has a swipe card system to track attendance and process payments, so attendance and payment processing is not needed in a county subsidy management system.

Version 2.7.8 Ready

Version 2.7.8 was created quickly with ony two new features, on a custom report for a single agency, the other the ability to search for child flags. This was urgently needed in the California space, to accommodate the Stage 3 funding conundrum. Our support team is taking appointments now for publishing version 2.7.8.

Searching for Child Flags

The option to search for child flags was added to the search criteria in the Families, Children and Search/Mail Utilities. There is now a drop down in each of the utilities now that allows you to search for child flags. This dropdown is located at the bottom of the respective “child” area in the list of parameters. The flag parameter is connected with all other parameters entered using and AND function, consistent with all other combinations for searches.

Note that we recommend to use the Search/Mail version, since the Child and Family utilities filter by eligibility and status, while Search/Mail does not. Search/Mail will provide most likely the best way to access the data for California Stage 3, which is implemented using a Child Flag.

Argh. 2.7.4 introduced a bug that made it past QA. the CD-9600 report crashed. It had to do with implementing database versions and realizing that the 9600 accessed the version field. We quickly patched it up, packaged the fix in a new release and let it out. You can contact Support if you need the release notes or have questions.

Military Families and the CEL

The issue of flagging and identifying military families has been raised by some counties. Here are our thoughts and possibly some of the avenues we can take to help solve the problem.

First, it’s not easy to add another “flag” to a family, since there aren’t any family flags now. The only entity that has generic “flags” that we could add are children, but there is no such thing as a military child.

We could add a “military” parent characteristic to those that are already there:

You could then search for military families using the Search/Mail Utility and find them.

You would NOT be able to see them in the Family or Child Utility. We’d have to do some work to display them.

However, I am not sure whether this is the right way.

Productive State-Wide CEL Meeting

I just got back from attending a state-wide CEL meeting. This was very productive, since not only did it give all the CEL administrators a chance to meet with the CDE and CDD staff and management, it also allowed the system vendors to have user-group sessions with their clients.

I got a lot of good feedback and requests which I will summarize and report on separately. It was good to see everyone at the meeting.

KinderWait 2.7.3 Published

By now all agencies should have received their upgrades to version 2.7.3, which includes all CSPP changes. If your agency is still not deployed, please contact Support and we can expedite the upgrade. There are a number of small enhancements wrapped up in this release. Release notes are also available from Support upon request.

QA is complete. We have released KinderWait version 2.7.3. Our support team is now contacting agencies to schedule installation. The support team also has the release notes as well as the eligibility rules documents for distribution.

Testing KinderWait v2.7.3

Version 2.7.3, which includes the updates to support the state’s new CSPP program, is built and is undergoing testing now. We should be fine with a release before July 1, 2009, when the CSPP program becomes active.
